Christophe Ballif receives an honorary doctorate from the University of Ljubljana

Prof. Dr. Christophe Ballif, Vice-President of CSEM's Sustainable Energy activities, has just received an honorary doctorate from the University of Ljubljana, and CSEM couldn’t be prouder.

A strong partnership with the University of Ljubljana

For over 20 years, CSEM and the University of Ljubljana have worked hand in hand on numerous projects aimed at advancing photovoltaic technologies. This fruitful partnership has included hosting researchers at CSEM and using cutting-edge measurement systems developed by the university to push the boundaries of innovation. These efforts are part of European initiatives that underscore the importance of interdisciplinary cooperation to tackle global challenges such as climate change.

A leader in sustainable energy and innovation

Christophe Ballif, one of the world’s leading experts in energy and photovoltaic solutions, conducting groundbreaking research at the intersection of academic excellence and industrial innovation. Since 2013, as the Vice-President of CSEM's Sustainable Energy activities, he has led a team of 90 researchers developing advanced solutions in solar energy, energy storage, and digital energy in collaboration with over 40 industry partners. His leadership has been pivotal in technology transfer and the industrialization of innovative photovoltaic devices, such as Tissot’s connected watches, including the Tissot T-Touch Connect Solar and Sport models, as well as integrating aesthetic solar surfaces, ensuring impact far beyond the laboratory.

A well-deserved recognition

Adding to his illustrious career, Christophe Ballif is also the recipient of the Becquerel Prize, awarded in 2016 for his contribution to high-efficiency photovoltaics. This award is a significant recognition in the field of solar energy, highlighting his pioneering work and its impact on the industry. In 2024, Clarivate recognized him as “one of the most highly cited researchers from EPFL’s School of Engineering”. His achievements include coauthoring more than 600 technical and scientific articles, securing multiple patents, and earning membership in the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences (SATW).
